Volunteer Position: Tutor - Tarrant County

Agency: Texas Youth Commission/Willoughby House & McFadden Ranch

Population Served:  Juvenile Delinquents in TYC facilities.

General summary of volunteer project:
To provide an assigned student academic instructions, which will help improve his/her school performance and understanding of a specific subject.

Length of commitment: 6 weeks

Location: apply at 2462 E. Long Ave., Ft. Worth, TX 76106. However the volunteer job is available at Ft. Worth Parole, 2462 E. Long Ave., Ft. Worth, TX 76106 and the local Halfway Houses, Willoughby House by Cherry Lane and I-30, Ft. Worth and McFadden Ranch in Roanoke, Texas.

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Review student's needs outlined in the Tutoring Needs Assessment provided by teacher.
  2. Utilize worksheets and assignments provided by teacher.
  3. Complete required reports to Volunteer Coordinator to be distributed to educational and treatment staff.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Completion of Texas Youth Commission basic orientation and certification.
  2. Willingness to work individually with an assigned student.
  3. Exhibit maturity and responsible behavior at all times. Observe and encourage appropriate personal limitations.

Training required: (1 ½ - 2 hours)

  1. Basic orientation and certification process to Texas Youth Commission.
  2. In-service training offered on a monthly basis. Classes should be attended as needed.
  3. Volunteer may request additional training at any time in specific areas.
