Volunteer Position: Tutor/Mentor

Agency: Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program 

Population Served: Kids in Chaotic Homes, Juvenile Delinquents, Truants & Runaways, Abuse/Neglect in Care

General summary of volunteer opportunity:
Volunteers serve as a tutor or mentor for a child/children. Volunteers need not be attorneys.

Time of commitment: Hours per week: 1 hour
Hours per month: 4 hours

Length of commitment: One complete school year, if possible.

Location: Nolan Estes AEP Elementary (Mapsco #44V) or other elementary school during the summer.

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Mentor one student or a small group of students, or
  2. Hold group meetings (at volunteer's option, lawyer's topic may be law-related), or
  3. Tutor one student or a small group of students.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. If volunteer is a licensed Texas attorney, must be in good standing.
  2. Must complete Children's Justice Project application and agree to criminal background check, SBOT, if applicable, and employment check.
  3. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  4. Must complete Dallas Public Schools application (includes approval for criminal background check) and training.

Training provided:

  1. Dallas Public Schools training (2 hours) or other site.
  2. Written training materials.

Required training provided at: Dallas Public School Offices, Dallas Bar Association or other arranged site.
