Volunteer Position: Translator

Agency: Collin County Children's Advocacy Center

Population Served: Abused/Neglect in Care

General summary of volunteer project:
Translators are needed in several areas – to watch supervised visits where the family does not speak English (usually Spanish); to make phone calls to families and apprise them of services available; to assist in the forensic interview process; on rare occasions, to assist the client in court.

Time commitment: Hours per week: varies as needed, unless it is a specific supervised visit.

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. These volunteers may help to watch visits and facilitate information between the clients and the caseworkers.
  2. Assist clients during interviews in translating for the client and the interviewer.
  3. Help transcribe/ translate video, audio, and handwritten notes/ interviews for the caseworker or investigator.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Must pass a background check and sign pledge of confidentiality.
  2. Must be over 21 years of age.
  3. Must be organized, reliable, and able to keep information confidential.

We have an overwhelming need for daytime people who are available on short notice to come in and help translate in Spanish.  Also need people with Chinese (Mandarin), Indian, Russian, Farsi, French, and any other language.

Training required:

Training will be on the job, but there is a mandatory orientation before being allowed to work with the children.
