Volunteer Position: Recreational Aide

Agency: Dallas County Juvenile Department

Population Served: Juvenile Delinquents

General summary of volunteer project:  Small groups (6-10 per group) of volunteers interact with residents by playing basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball or board games at one of our four institutions.

Time commitment: Hours per week: 2-4, weeknights and weekends Hours Per Month: 2-4

Length of commitment: 6 months to 1 year

Location:

  1. Detention Center & Marzelle Hill Transition Center, 2600 Lone Star Dr., Dallas TX 75212 (Mapsco #43V)
  2. Letot Center (Runaway Shelter); 1050 Denton Dr., Dallas TX 75250 (Mapsco # 23J)
  3. Youth Village (Male long term residential facility); 1508 E. Langdon Rd., Dallas TX 75241 (Mapsco #68S)

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Participate in recreational activity with residents.
  2. Listen to youth, but do not lecture, assist with building self-esteem.
  3. Group of volunteers could participate once a week or once a month.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Must pass criminal and reference checks.
  2. Must be an excellent listener, patient, flexible and reliable.
  3. At least 21 years of age.
  4. Must have basic knowledge of filing, typing and computer skills.

Training required:

  1. 7-hour general training provided by Volunteer Coordinator.
  2. 1-hour specific training provided by institution program or activity coordinator.
  3. Yearly service training.
