Volunteer Position: Problem Solving and Coping Skills Facilitator

General summary of volunteer project:
The volunteer is involved with an innovative program in the Dallas
County Juvenile Detention Center and Youth Village. The program utilizes
an interactive computer program, video and daily activities to help
children learn healthy problem solving skills and age appropriate
copying skills. Activities range from art and written exercises to
viewing of selected videos. The volunteer will aide in facilitating this
project in the Detention Center.
Time commitment: Hours per week: 2
Hours per month: 8
Length of commitment: Choice of Shifts: Evening, after school
or weekends

Specific volunteer responsibilities:
- Assist teachers in classrooms as a problem solving and coping
skills facilitator in our 8 Cylinders Program.
- Teach CD ROM Programs on computer to residents and assist with
activity exercises and gather material for them.
- Facilitate discussions with group of 10 youth regarding application
of newly learned skills to the situations, which led them into the
Juvenile System.
Volunteer qualifications:
- Must pass criminal and reference background checks.
- Must be flexible and reliable.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Must have basic interest in computers, music and art.
Training required:
- 7-hour general training provided by Volunteer Coordinator.
- 1-hour specific training provided by institution program or activity
coordinator.
- Yearly service training.
