Volunteer Position: Mentor/Life Coach

Agency: Transition Resource Action Center (TRAC)

Population Served: Abused/neglected or Juvenile Delinquents

General summary of volunteer project:
Mentors serve as a “Life Coaches” for these young adults who are planning for independent living without a system of family or community support.  Volunteers are matched with a young people aged 17 and up based on common interests. The goal is to develop a healthy, trusting relationship, in which the youth can seek personal guidance, ask for aid in making clear decisions and observe a positive adult role model. 

Time commitment: Flexible; Hours per month: 4-6

Length of commitment: Minimum of 9-12 months

Location: varies

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

Meet regularly at a mutually selected sight to talk, problem solve, play, share your experiences, or provide information on career choices, through the offer of friendship, advice and guidance.

Volunteer qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Ability to work with teens and adults
  • communication and listening skills
  • Exhibit mature and responsible behavior at all times
  • Be aware of age appropriate activities

A background check will be done on all volunteers.

Training required:

  • 1-hour orientation
  • 7 to 10 hours training prior to volunteering
  • Voluntary in-service training offered monthly
  • Consultation and ongoing support offered as needed
