General summary of
volunteer project:
Listener program is coordinated by the school counselor and is designed
to help students who need additional support. Trained volunteers give
students attention and understanding. Serve as non-judgmental listeners.
This is an early intervention program focusing on grades 4-8 in
selected schools. Not a mentor because volunteer can serve many children
over a school semester.
Time commitment:
Hours per week: 1-2
Hours per month: 5-14
Length of
commitment: School year (Aug - May)
Location: 218
schools throughout Dallas Independent School District
Specific volunteer
responsibilities:
- Extends reach of
counselors, giving one-on-one attention to a student.
- To be non-judgmental listeners, friends, etc.
Volunteer qualifications:
- Literate, caring adult with belief that all students can be
successful.
- A person who is willing to devote some quality time to these
students.
Training required:
- One 2-hour session scheduled on a regular basis at DISD's
administration building.
- Sessions can be provided for a group at their site.
