Volunteer Position: Lend an Ear Visitor

Population Served: Juvenile Delinquents

General summary of volunteer project:
Volunteer interact with residents who seldom, if ever, have anyone visit them. These volunteers provide a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear.

Time commitment: Hours per week: 2-3 
Hours per month:
2-8

Length of commitment: 2 hours per week, weeknights and weekends. (1 year commitment)

Location:  

  1. Detention Center & Marzelle Hill Transition Center, 2600 Lone Star, Dallas TX 75212 (Mapsco #43V)
  2. Letot Center (Runaway Shelter), 1050 Denton Dr., Dallas TX 75250 (Mapsco # 23J)
  3. Youth Village (Male long term residential facility), 1508 E. Langdon Rd., Dallas TX 75241 (Mapsco # 68S)

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Talk one-on-one with residents; play board games with youth and/or assist youth with level studies.
  2. Listen to youth, do not lecture, assist with building self-esteem.
  3. Meet with designated youth once or twice a week.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Must pass criminal and reference background checks.
  2. Must be flexible, patient and reliable.
  3. At least 21 years of age.
  4. Must like teenagers.

Training required:

  1. 7-hour general training provided by Volunteer Coordinator.
  2. 1-hour specific training provided by institution program or activity coordinator.
  3. Yearly service training.
