Volunteer Position: Guide-A-Long Mentor

Agency: Dallas County Juvenile Dept.

Population Served: Juvenile Delinquents

General summary of volunteer project:  One of the most common factors in DCJD youth's lives is an absence of a caring significant adult in their lives. The Juvenile Department would like to attempt to assist in filling this gap for our young population. A mentor is a trusted and faithful individual who listens, supports and guides on a consistent basis over a defined period of time.

Time commitment: Hours per week: 1 - 2 hrs.  
Hours per month:
10 - 12

Length of commitment: According to mentor/mentee's schedule

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Commit to 6 months or length of youth's probation.
  2. Make in person or phone contact once a week.
  3. Be a friend, listener, supporter and guide.
  4. Have an outing once a month.
  5. Report and communicate with staff.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Likes teenagers.
  2. Patience.
  3. Excellent listener.
  4. Reliable.
  5. Role model.
  6. Be a friend.
  7. Able to tap resources.

Training required:

  1. 7 hour general training provided by volunteer coordinator.
  2. 3 hour specific training provided by mentor coordinator.
  3. Orientation with probation officer.
  4. Yearly in-service training.
