Volunteer Position:
Foster Parent
General summary of
volunteer project:
Provide foster care for children who are in State custody because of
abuse and neglect issues. This includes caring for the children in your
home and providing transportation to appointments and parental visits.
Time commitment:
Varied
Hours per commitment: Full time custody
Length of
commitment: At least 1 year
Location: Your
home
Specific volunteer
responsibilities:
- Care for child in the home.
- Provide a nurturing and stable environment.
- Provide transportation to appointments and parental visits.
- Provide help with homework and other educational needs.
- Provide recreational time for the child.
- Attend school meetings.
- Cooperate with CPS and professional staff.
- Provide feedback to the child's worker regarding the progress of the
child.
- Give feedback and help create the child's Plan of Service.
Volunteer
qualifications:
- Must be 21 years old.
- Must not have any felony convictions that are classified as a crime
against the person.
- If married, must be married for at least two years.
- Be willing to share information regarding your background and
lifestyle.
- Agree to a home study, which includes visits with all household
members.
- Complete a parenting application.
- Consent to a criminal background check.
- Attend free training to learn about issues of abused and neglected
children.
- Agree to a non-physical discipline policy.
- Permit fire and health inspections of your home.
- Vaccinate pets annually.
- Obtain and maintain CPR/ First Aid Certification.
- Obtain TB testing.
Training required:
- 24 - 50 hours of training.
- CPR/ First Aid Certification
- 20 hours of ongoing training annually.
