Volunteer Position: Detention Bi-Lingual Liaison

General summary of volunteer project:
Daily at 1:00 p.m., parents come to the Detention Center for
Detention Hearings for their youth who are residents in the center. Many
of our parents do not speak English and have difficulty understanding
the rules, policies and procedures of the Detention Center and the
Detention Hearing. The bi-lingual volunteer would be the person, with
the aide of written materials, to explain rules and answer questions.
Time commitment: Hours per week: 1-3
Hours per month: 4-12
Length of commitment: 1-3 hours once per week, weekdays
Location: Detention Center, 2600 Lone Star Dr., Dallas TX

Specific volunteer responsibilities:
- Explain Detention Center and detention hearing policies and
procedures to parents.
- Answer questions.
- Listen to concerns of parents.
Volunteer qualifications:
- Likes working with people.
- Patience and reliability.
- Excellent listener.
- Bi-lingual.
Training required:
- 7-hour general training provided by Volunteer Coordinator.
- 1-hour specific training provided by institution program or activity
coordinator.
- Yearly in-service training.
Required training provided at:
Held every 6 weeks at Dallas
County Juvenile Department
