Volunteer Position: Child Advocate

Agency: Dallas CASA, Inc.

Population Served: Abused/neglect in Care

General summary of volunteer project:
Volunteers are assigned to an abused or neglected child by a judge. The volunteer conducts thorough research on the background of the case, reviews documents and interviews everyone involved. Reports are made to the court, providing the judge with information that will help make an informed decision about the child's permanency.

8-20 (varies by case)

Length of commitment: An average CASA spends about 88 hours a year assigned to a case.

Location: Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex - at locations as needed by the individual case.

Specific volunteer responsibilities:

  1. Fact-find for the courts.
  2. Advocate for the child.
  3. Work toward permanency for the child.

Volunteer qualifications:

  1. Commitment - One year.
  2. Objectivity - Represent the best interests of the child.
  3. Communication Skills - Ability to work with a wide variety of people.
  4. Must be over the age of 21. Must complete volunteer application and agree to a criminal history check.

Training Required:

  1. One hour orientation - 1st step
  2. Personal interview and background check - 2nd step
  3. Thirty hours intensive volunteer training - 3rd step
